The Zune flash is the first Microsoft flash-based media player. It was launched with the second generation of Zune devices and comes in 4 gb, 8gb, and 16gb models.

Note: This troubleshooting guide covers all second generation flash-based Zune media players, and is not for other generation or Hard-drive based devices.

  • Like any other electrical device, the Zune sometimes needs to have a software reset applied to it. To do this, verify the Zune is plugged into a power outlet and the hold key on the top of the device is set to off. Next hold both the ‘back’ key and the ‘up’ key at the same time for about 3 seconds or until device begins to restart. Release all buttons once this occurs. This should perform a software reset on your device.

  • If the device is still not functioning after a software reset, but your computer recognizes it when it is plugged in, try reformatting the device. To do this follow these directions:

  • Note: This will delete all information from your device and will require resyncing with your computer.

  • With the device connected to your computer, select the settings option, click on device, click on sync options, then click Erase all Content.

If reformatting does not work, you will need to initialize the disk.

  • Note: Do this only as a last resort if all other methods have not worked, this will remove all information and the device’s firmware and will require you to reconnect to a computer before you can use the device.

  • Initialize the disk by rebooting the device, when a black screen appears, press back, then select OK and Play at the same time. Reconnect to computer after sequence is completed.

  • If your device does not operate for extended periods of time, it is very likely that you will need to replace the battery on your device. To do this, follow this Battery replacement guide

  • Please note: replacing the battery requires soldering the new battery to the circuit board

  • If the device will play music but will not display anything on the screen and all software resets and reformats have been applied to the device, it is likely that the screen needs replacement. In order to replace the screen, follow the instructions in this Screen replacement guide

  • If the device is unable to communicate with a computer or power strip and all other methods of resetting have been tried, follow the Communication Board Replacement Guide to replace the chipset responsible for the device’s power and data transfer.

  • If the faceplate of your device is damaged it can be hard to view the internal LCD screen on the device. Follow this Faceplate replacement guide to fix this problem.

  • If the back cover of your device has become worn, broken, or scratched, replace it using the Back Cover Replacement Guide

  • To replace a broken internal center frame, please follow the Center frame replacement guide

  • A broken center frame is usually evidence of a significant impact or a faulty previous replacement. Be careful and observant during repair as it is likely that there are other broken components in the device.
