Introduction
If the frame is deformed, it’s important to replace it to make sure the new screen will mount correctly and won’t suffer damage from uneven pressure.
Before disassembling your device, discharge the battery below 25%. The battery can catch fire and/or explode if accidentally punctured, but the chances of that happening are much lower if discharged.
Note: This guide instructs you to replace only the screen while leaving the original frame and motherboard in place. However, some replacement screens for this phone come pre-installed in a new frame (a.k.a. chassis), which requires a very different procedure. Make sure you have the correct part before starting this guide.
Before you begin this procedure, be sure to have a set of replacement adhesives for both the back panel and the screen.
What you need
Step 1
Heat the rear glass
- Prepare an iOpener and apply it to the rear glass for at least two minutes to loosen the adhesive underneath.
- A hair dryer, heat gun, or hot plate may also be used, but be careful not to overheat the phone—the display and internal battery are both susceptible to heat damage.

Step 2
Insert an opening pick
- Secure a suction handle to the bottom edge of the rear glass, as close to the edge as possible.
- If the rear glass is cracked, the suction handle may not stick. Try lifting it with strong tape, or superglue the suction handle in place and allow it to cure so you can proceed.
- Lift the rear glass with the suction handle to create a small gap between the back cover and the frame.
- In case you have trouble creating a gap, apply more heat to further soften the adhesive. Follow the iOpener instructions to avoid overheating.
- Insert an opening pick into the gap you created.
- Slide the opening pick to the bottom right corner to slice the adhesive.
- Leave the opening pick in place to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 4
Slice the adhesive
- If the adhesive becomes hard to cut, it has most likely cooled down. Use your iOpener for one to two minutes to reheat it.
- Insert a third opening pick at the bottom left corner of your phone.
- Slide the opening pick along the left edge of your phone to slice the adhesive.
- Leave the opening pick in the top left corner to prevent the adhesive from resealing.

Step 7
Open your phone
- Carefully fold the rear glass to the right side of the phone assembly like you’d open the back cover of a book.
- Avoid straining the finger print cable during this procedure.

Step 10
Pry up the motherboard cover
- Insert the tip of an opening pick underneath the bottom left edge of the motherboard cover.
- Do not insert the opening pick deeper than 3-4 mm to prevent damaging the motherboard.
- Slide the opening pick along the left edge of the motherboard cover to unhinge the plastic clips and pry it up.

Step 19
Insert an opening pick
- Once the screen is warm to touch, apply a suction cup to the bottom edge of the phone.
- If your screen is badly cracked, covering it with a layer of clear packing tape may allow the suction cup to adhere. Alternatively, very strong tape may be used instead of the suction cup. If all else fails, you can superglue the suction cup to the screen.
- Lift the screen with the suction handle to create a small gap between the screen and the midframe.
- Insert an opening pick in the gap between the midframe and the screen.
- In case you only want to replace the display glass but not the LCD and digitizer you need to be especially carful during the next step. There’s a small cable at the bottom right end of the LCD which is very fragile. Only slide with the very tip of your opening pick (about 1-2 mm).

Step 24
Remove the screen
- Thread the display flex cable through the gap in the midframe and remove the screen.
- Compare your new replacement part to the original part—you may need to transfer remaining components like the speaker grill from your old screen to your new screen.
- Apply new adhesive where it’s necessary after cleaning the relevant areas with isopropyl alcohol (>90%).
- During reassembly, follow this guide in case you’re using a pre-cut adhesive card.

Compare your new replacement part to the original part—you may need to transfer remaining components or remove adhesive backings from the new part before installing.
To reassemble your device, follow the above steps in reverse order.
The best way to secure the new screen is to apply a sheet of custom-cut double-sided tape to the back of the screen.
