Introduction

Note: Some printers have problems with their respective model specific utilities with the HP UPD. This usually affects older models like the P2015, P2035, P2055 and M401 series. This may be fixed on the newer JetIntelligence models, but I have not tested it and cannot guarantee the driver will coexist!

IMPORTANT: While HP typically ships the UPD with newer printers, it is “customized” for that series, and often required to use printer utilities. IN ORDER TO GAURANTEE USE THE PRINTER UTILITIES, INSTALL THE MODEL SPECIFIC DRIVER. I WILL NOT TEST THESE PRINTERS DUE TO POTENTIAL COMPLICATIONS.

Step 1

              Research your printer (PCL/PostScript support)
  • Due to the general nature of this guide, specific languages are not covered. The HP UPD supports PCL6, PCL5 and PostScript.
  • Find out what print languages your printer supports. The LaserJet Pro M401 series supports PCL6, PCL5 and PostScript. For this printer, PCL6 is recommended.
  • If you use USB, plug your printer in now.

Step 2

Download the best HP UPD driver
  • I knew what my printer used in advance. Yours may have minor variations.
  • Once you know what print languages your printer supports, download the best one for your printer. The driver can be found on the HP website.

Step 3

              Driver installation (USB Mode)
  • This method copies the UPD files onto your computer. If you connect a new printer and don’t install the printer specific driver, this can be used in place of the model specific driver.
  • At the installation screen, select USB mode- Plug and Play.
  • Once you select the mode, pick the options you wish to use. While these settings can be changed, leave it as-is unless you understand what the change does.
  • Click Next and the files will be copied to your computer.

Step 4

              Driver installation (Dynamic mode)
  • This installation method only works with networked printers. USB IS NOT SUPPORTED.
  • After the driver loads, agree to the license.
  • Once you agree to the license, you will be asked which installation mode you want to use. Select Dynamic Mode and click Next.
  • After selecting Dynamic Mode, click Next. The printer driver will be installed, as well as a universal printer.
  • Once the driver is installed, manual IP address configuration is required, and it must be static. Your printer will need to be configured using the assigned IP address.

Step 5

              Printer configuration (Manual)
  • Manual configuration is required when using the HP UPD to replace a failing legacy printer driver. It fan also be used to correct a failed Dynamic Mode installation.
  • Most printers will work with “USB_001”. NOTE: Older printers like the 1200 and 1012 often use “DOT4”. If USB_001 does not work, you have this type of printer.
  • Find Devices and Printers. The location varies based on what version of Windows you run. Search for Control panel and find Devices and Printers.
  • Click Add a Printer. Select Add a Local printer if your printer uses USB. If networked, select Add a Network, Wireless or Bluetooth printer.
  • Allow your computer to populate the driver list. Find HP and then locate the driver that says HP Universal Printing (PCL6/PCL5/PostScript). Select the driver and click Next.
  • Name your printer, then click Next.

I bought an HP printer specified by laserjet. I have followed a few steps to install this printer via HP UPD. at first search for the correct driver, then install it first in a USB mode after that in dynamic mode. then set the configuration pf printer and after completing all the steps just print once for a test.
