Yik Yak is a social media app for smartphones that permits anonymous messaging between users who are located close to each other that launched in 2013. It uses GPS information to create groups of users within a maximum radius of five miles of one another, allowing them to read and write to a location-specific message feed.

To help minimize cyberbullying, Yik Yak establishes “fenced-off” zones near schools where minors might try to use it and prohibits messaging in those areas. Despite this, some schools have banned smartphone use completely after students were found using the application to harass children.
