WiMAX, short for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a wireless microwave MAN technology that provides up to 1 Gbit/s as far as 30 miles away. Alternatively called IEEE 802.16, WiMAX is similar to Wi-Fi technology, except that it can provide much higher data transfer rates. This causes some people to call it “Wi-Fi on steroids.” It is also based on the IEEE 802.16 standard, whereas Wi-Fi is based on the IEEE 802.11 standard.

Now called Fixed WiMAX, the standard was originally published in 2001. WiMAX can provide Internet access across cities and countries using various devices for connectivity. It is a great option for those who cannot get broadband cable or DSL access. It’s also possible to use WiMAX for VoIP phone calls and IPTV services.
