In January 2009, Palm released a new operating system for smartphones called WebOS. It was first released on the Palm Pre, Pixi, and Veer phones as a replacement for the Palm OS used on Palm’s previous smartphones. WebOS used multi-touch gestures to navigate around the Palm Pre’s touch screen.
Hewlett-Packard purchased the Palm company and the rights to WebOS, in April 2010. HP intended to use WebOS on all their devices starting in 2011 with the HP TouchPad tablet computer. However, on August 18, 2011, further production of WebOS devices was discontinued, and HP announced an interest in selling its Personal Systems Group, including WebOS.
