WCDMA, also known as W-CDMA or Wideband Code Division Multiple Access, is a communications standard used in 3G mobile networks. It supports cellular voice, text messaging, MMS, and high-speed data transmission. As part of 3G, it gave network providers the ability to support broadband Internet services on mobile devices. The first WCDMA network was called FOMA (Freedom of Mobile Multimedia Access), and was launched in 2001 in Japan.
