Short for video cassette recorder, the VCR was first released by Philips in 1970. It is a recording and playback device used with TVs in the United States. It allows someone to play a VHS tape or record a TV show to a VHS tape. Today, although VCRs are still around, most consumers have replaced their VCR with DVD and DVR players.
