The User State Migration Tool, or USMT, is a Microsoft utility that allows users to transfer files and settings from one computer to another. Users must be familiar with scripting languages to use USMT, as it is a command line utility. USMT may be utilized with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7, and 8. It can transfer files and settings between computers running 32 and 64-bit versions of Windows, and vice versa.

For users not familiar with programming, a third-party application can be downloaded to provide a GUI front-end for USMT.
