Alternatively called the transmission speed and transfer speed, the transfer rate is the speed that information is moved between one or more locations. A transfer rate is commonly measured in bits per second (bps) or bytes per second (Bps). Higher transfer rates may be rated as megabytes per second (Mbps) and gigabytes per second (Gbps).

For example, a 9,600 bps modem can transmit up to 9,600 bits per second. When comparing a 9,600 bps modem with a 2,400 bps modem, the 9,600 bps modem can transmit 4x more data per second.

A CPU transfer speed is determined by its clock speed.
