The Galaxy Z Fold is the first series of foldable Android smartphones created by Samsung. Galaxy Z Fold phones have two displays, a slightly narrow external screen for casual use, and a large, phablet-style screen that is accessed by unfolding the phone like a book.
The Galaxy Z Fold’s name was influenced by Samsung’s other folding series of smartphones, the Galaxy Z Flip. The difference between the two phones is the Z Flip acts as a traditional flip phone, while the Z Fold is more like a tablet.
The original Galaxy Fold
Originally announced in February 2019, the first phone in the series was called the Galaxy Fold. It was to be one of the first on the market to feature a foldable display. The 4.6-inch “cover” display expanded to 7.3 inches when unfolded. The Galaxy Fold was to be released in spring 2019, at a starting price point of $1,980.
In April 2019, the Galaxy Fold’s release was postponed by Samsung. Review models had issues, including a hinge that allowed objects to be trapped inside and a display layer that could easily peel off.
Samsung re-released the phone with a more permanent screen protector and a more well-covered hinge in September 2019.
