Alternatively called SysV, System V was the first commercial version of UNIX; designed by AT&T and released in 1983. While in development there were four major releases of System V: 1, 2, 3, and 4. System V release 4 or SVR4 was the most successful version of all releases and helped influence the creation of Linux.
The development of System V stopped when AT&T sold all its Unix assets to Novell in 1993, which later sold System V assets to SCO.
