Released by AMD in February 2009, Socket AM3 is a socket architecture found on motherboards designed for desktop computer processors. Socket AM3 motherboards support DDR3 SDRAM, feature an FSB (front-side bus) of 200 MHz, and utilize HyperTransport technology. Four types of AMD processors utilize Socket AM3:

  • Athlon II
  • Phenom II
  • Opteron 1380 series
  • Sempron

These processors range from one to six-cores, with speeds up to 3.5 GHz, providing for powerful computing capabilities.

The predecessors to the Socket AM3 were the Socket AM2 and Socket AM2+.
