Real-time Transport Protocol, also known as RTP, is an Internet protocol that delivers audio and video over networks in real-time. It is used in conjunction with RTCP, or Real-time Control Protocol, that monitors the RTP transmission and ensures stream quality. Together, the two protocols deliver streaming media that does not stutter, jitter, or go out-of-sync when consecutive data packets are received out of order.
When an RTP session is initiated, the RTCP session operates alongside it, calculating statistics about the stream. These statistics are then used by RTP, which adjusts the stream in real-time to maintain optimum audio and video quality.
