Power up may refer to any of the following:
- Power up is turning on a computer, computer peripheral, or other electrical devices. Turning on the computer is commonly accomplished by pressing the power button on the top or front of a computer. Other ways to turn on a computer include a switch on the back of the computer or the power button above the keyboard for a laptop.
When a computer is powered up it starts the boot process, which loads the computers operating system and other necessary drivers. After the computer has successfully booted it is ready to be used.
- With gaming, a power-up or powerup is a unique item that gives the game character an advantage. For example, a power-up may make a character faster or stronger. Once a power-up is gained, it may activate immediately or require a special button or key to be pressed. For example, in Mario, when the character finds the starman (star) power-up, their character is made invincible for a short time and gives them the ability to not worry about dying.
