The Roland MPU-401 is a device and technology that is the de facto standard for MIDI (musical instrument digital interfaces) on computers. The original model came in the form of a small box. However, the MPU-401 interface was also commonly included on motherboards or computer sound cards to facilitate the connection of MIDI devices.
While important, this device and its technology are now obsolete due to the rise of the USB (universal serial bus) interface standard. Users who are looking to connect their musical instruments to a computer now utilize audio interface devices rather than MPU-401.
