Microsoft Works is a word processing software program developed by Microsoft that was first released in 1987. Microsoft Works was often included on OEM computers. Microsoft Works was used as an alternate solution to Microsoft Word because of the cost difference between the two different programs.

Microsoft Works and Microsoft Word use different file formats. The default Microsoft Word document format is DOC or DOCX, whereas Microsoft Works uses the WPS format.

Microsoft discontinued the development and distribution of Microsoft Works in September 2007, with Works 9.0 being the last version developed. It may still be purchased from select online retail stores or auction websites, but compatibility with Windows 7 and later versions is not guaranteed. Software updates for Microsoft Works are also not available from Microsoft.
