When referring to computer displays, a matte surface is one which scatters light to reduce reflection. LCD screens with a matte surface will reflect only a fraction of the surrounding light, making it easier to view the screen under bright conditions. The drawback is that matte displays may have slightly reduced contrast ratios and vibrancy of color.
