MATE, pronounced “Mah-Tay,” is a desktop environment for the X Window System initially released in 2011. It is based on the code for the GNOME 2 desktop environment, which is no longer actively maintained.
MATE is supported by the developers of Linux Mint and is used as the default desktop environment for several Linux distributions.
