First released in 2005, Kubuntu is a Linux variant derived from the Ubuntu operating system. The primary difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu is the desktop environment. Kubuntu uses KDE, whereas Ubuntu uses Unity.

Kubuntu is widely adopted across the globe for many civic and educational projects. Notably, in 2011, it was chosen as the operating system to be installed on half a million primary and secondary schools in Brazil.

Like Ubuntu, Kubuntu uses the APT package management system to install and upgrade its system software and properly manage all software dependencies.
