Imgur is an image hosting and community discussion site. In 2017, it was the 11th-most popular site in the United States and 38th-most popular in the world. It was founded by Alan Schaaf in 2009 while he was a computer science student at Ohio University.
The site hosts still and animated images uploaded by users, who can vote and comment on each other’s submissions. A mobile app is available, which can take photos on an Android or iOS mobile device and upload them directly to Imgur.
How Imgur was born
In 2009, Alan Schaaf announced Imgur in a post on Reddit titled, “My Gift to Reddit: I created an image hosting service that doesn’t suck. What do you think?”. The community loved it, and Imgur soon became Reddit’s top image hosting site.
Imgur users refer to themselves as “Imgurians.” The company, headquartered in San Francisco, was estimated to generate $34 million in monthly revenue in 2017 and is valued at $3.6 billion.
