I may refer to any of the following:

  1. With computer processors, “i” is an abbreviation for the Intel company. For example, i3, i5, i7, i286, i386, and i486 are different types of Intel processors.

  2. In programs dealing with text, like a word processor, an icon of an “I” may be shown to represent italics.

  3. In text editors and any program that supports inserting text, a blinking “I” is the text cursor to indicate the insertion point. This cursor is also known as the I-beam pointer.

  4. I is a keyboard key used with the keyboard shortcuts Alt+I, Command+I, and Ctrl+I.

  5. With regular expressions, “i” is a regular expression flag to ignore the case (uppercase and lowercase allowed).

  6. With Microsoft Excel and other spreadsheet programs, “I” is the ninth column of a spreadsheet. To reference the first cell in the column, you’d use “I1.”

  7. In the phonetic alphabet, “I” is often pronounced as “India.”

  8. In computer gaming, I is often used to access the player’s inventory.

  9. With Adobe Photoshop, I is a shortcut to select the eyedropper tool.

  10. I is the ninth letter of the English alphabet. The letter “I” comes after “H” and is followed by the letter “J.” To create a capitalized “I,” press Shift and I at the same time.

With U.S. QWERTY keyboards, the “I” key is on the top row, right of the “U,” and left of the “O” key. See our keyboard page for a visual example of all keyboard keys.

If the “I” key is not working on the keyboard, see: Some keys on my computer keyboard aren’t working.

In ASCII, the uppercase “I” is “073” in decimal (01001001 in binary). The lowercase “i” is “105” in decimal (01101001 in binary).

Doing the Alt code Alt+73 creates a capital “I” and Alt+105 creates a lowercase “i” character.

The number 4 on a phone keypad is used to create an “I” on a US phone.
