Announced February 2, 1998, HD-ROM is short for high-density read-only memory and is a storage technology developed by IBM and Norsam Technologies. It utilizes a 50 nanometer particle beam capable of writing 20 MB per second and sending at 3 MB per second. HD-ROM supports up to 165 gigabytes on medium the same size as a standard CD-ROM disc.
