Officially released on January 8, 2018, GPay or Google Pay is an app for iPhone and Android smartphones that allows users to transfer money between one another, similar to Venmo and Cash App. It also securely stores and autofills payment information on third-party websites on the Chrome browser and other Google-operated platforms.

While Google Pay once served as a tap-to-pay service for in-store payments, these features were migrated to the Google Wallet app in 2022. Pressing the “Pay contactless” button in the Google Pay app launches the Google Wallet app, where all debit, credit, and gift cards were migrated.
