Free space may refer to any of the following:
- Free space is a term that describes the available storage capacity of a drive or disk. For example, the picture below shows that there is 25.9 GB of free space on the C: drive.
Knowing how much free space a storage medium has is useful when you want to install a new program. Using the C: drive pictured below as an example, if you wanted to install a new computer game, it would need to be less than 25.9 GB in size. If it was any larger, there would be insufficient free space.
- When describing an action or verb, freeing space is removing software or files from a drive or disk to increase available storage. For example, if you had a copy of Microsoft Word, but decided to use the cloud-based Google Docs instead, you could uninstall Word to free up drive space.
