Short for Encrypting File System, EFS is a feature found in Microsoft Windows 2000 and Windows XP (NTFS 5.0 and above) that aren’t home versions. EFS allows users to selectively encrypt individual files, folders one at a time, and whole drives. This action protects data from attacks made by those who have physical access to a computer.
