Disassembly may refer to any of the following:

  1. When referring to hardware, to disassemble is to break down a device into separate parts. A device may be disassembled to help determine a problem, to replace a part, or take the parts and use them in another device or sell them individually. For example, if a computer has a bad processor, you may need to open the computer case, disassemble the heat sink and processor, and manually replace it.

  2. When referring to software, disassembly is taking the source code from a program.
