dBase was a file database management system that was widely-used beginning in the 1980s.
Originally released under the name “Vulcan” in 1978, dBase was purchased by the Ashton-Tate Corporation in 1980 and released as dBASE II for the Apple II and IBM PC systems.
The dBase file format, using the file extension .dbf, is still supported by many database applications today.
