With a document, a cross-reference is a pointer or link to other information or parts of a document. For example, in a Microsoft Word document, you could create a cross-reference hyperlink that links the reader to the source of information being cited. If the reader were to click the hyperlink, the cross-reference would direct them to the citation information.
