Container may refer to any of the following:

  1. In general, a container is an object or location capable of holding something. For example, the Recycle Bin on a computer is a location containing deleted files.

  2. When describing software, a container or container software is a location that stores all the software and settings necessary to run an application. Packaging software (containerization) makes it easier to run that software in the cloud or on different servers because it has everything needed.

To help manage and control a container, container management software (e.g., Docker or Kubernetes) is used.

  1. With HTML, a container may describe a container tag.
