Code 128 is a symbology (font) in barcode technology that uses all 128 characters of the ASCII table, which allows for an alphanumeric barcode. This symbology is used by downloading the font files, so that it may be translated into printer code, allowing the printer to print barcodes correctly. However, Code 128 is not necessary for all printers, as specialized barcode printers have different barcode symbologies (fonts) built-in.
